About Me

I’m a stone sculptor and carver, working in the Upper Calder Valley, West Yorkshire. Using only traditional tools and methods, I share workshop space in Shaw Lodge Mill, Halifax. A traditional craft in a traditional space.

…a little more about me and my practice.

Inspired by early 20th century art, modernism and medieval grotesques, I create original, occasionally semi-abstract, sculptures.

Design is merely the starting point. Working mainly in reclaimed limestone, sandstone or slate with their unpredictable natural inclusions and flaws, I must respond, even mid-carving, to work with and best reveal and accentuate each stone’s true character.

Perhaps surprisingly, long walks on the moors are a fundamental part of my sculpting practice, allowing me to experience the local landscape and the elemental forces which have shaped it — ideas which I then bring back into my studio.

I often return to the same roads, tracks and places, allowing myself to breathe it all in, and bringing a sense of time and place ready to be layered into my work. I carve stone as my connection to our environment and — more simply — because I can’t not.

Almost all the works I produce can be displayed indoors or outdoors, are weather-resistant, and have the potential to last for centuries. Over time, natural weathering will enhance the character of each artwork. The idea of lifespan for each piece is always considered, even before the first touch of the chisel.

My sculptures are often intended very tactile, not just intended to allow people to touch but actively encouraging it, using stone to provide a daily reminder of the ultimate fragility of everything.
